The monster costumes were originally intended to be used for the movie "Scumdogs Of The Universe," which ended up becoming the title of their second and best-selling album. By that time, in , GWAR had become a bonafide hit amongst metalheads and armchair appreciators of high irony. MTV amplified their spectacle to the point of true stardom.
Don't believe me? GWAR was always the kind of band that was in on its own joke and never gave an iota of a fuck about mainstream comprehension. They never watered it down. There were always people who didn't understand them. The city of Athens, GA , for one.
They shut down a GWAR concert. Some of us. The group of human slaves that created GWAR were originally, some of them had been students in the sculpture and paint and print making department at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. There were also a group of just punk rock musicians. My younger self was a part of that, and so we were just sort of in the scene playing music. In the Richmond scene, and we all kind of joined forces.
Musicians and visual artists to create GWAR. Thirty years! SFL Music: It had some really great concepts. What inspired that album? Actually, Scumdogs, it was a record that we had been working on for quite some time.
We put out Hell-O released in which was a bitter disappointment to all involved he chuckled. It really was. Scumdogs is a record, you know, we were trying to sort of have a more metal sound and I think we achieved that on that record.
Of course, there was entirely too much cocaine, chocolate milkshakes, and Chinese chicken salad involved, and so the mix is very greasy.
So, with this release, which is a remix and a remaster of that, you really get the sound of sort of the way that we intended it to be. And the fans have reacted strongly to it too as well, but as far as like the concepts that were involved in that record. Really, we sort of dived into telling the story of GWAR which is a band from outer space.
We were part of an elite, fighting force called the Scumdogs of the Universe, and so this record really sort of starts to tell that story. Then as the records go on, you get more and more of that. SFL Music: Who is in the band at this point that did the album? Beefcake the Mighty was originally, that was a younger me. I played bass guitar on the record. GWAR have survived numerous personnel changes over the years, a potential problem that has been mitigated by the fact that the band's "characters" never change, only the musicians playing them.
Despite a decline in media attention, GWAR have also proven to be a consistent live act and continue to record a new album with each new stage act. Unlike most career bands, however, GWAR have released almost as many full-length videos as they have albums. Along with Phallus in Wonderland , the group assaulted the eyes with Skulhed Face , Rendezvous with Ragnarok , Dawn of the Day of the Night of the Penguin , It's Sleazy , and a slew of subsequent films.
Musically, GWAR 's early gem Scumdogs of the Universe is considered to be one of the band's most entertaining works. The concert recording Live from Mt. In , after celebrating their 25th year and re-signing to Metal Blade, GWAR took a similar conceptual approach and left Earth's surface again to battle their enemy Cardinal Sin in space on Lust in Space.
